The Longroad team has a consistent track record of successfully financing wind and solar projects, with several company principals and key employees focusing on sourcing construction and long-term capital for the projects, including debt and tax equity. The following provides a summary of the team’s collective track record since 2008:

  • Completed development and closed financing for 33 projects with approximately 3,300 MW of nameplate capacity, including four high-voltage transmission lines.
  • Raised over $11 billion of capital, including project finance debt, tax equity, corporate debt, partnerships, and sponsor equity (with notable financing transactions closed during the global financial crisis).
  • In 2015 post acquisition of First Wind, raised over $4 billion of capital

Position Overview

Working in Longroad’s Portland, ME office, you’ll join a group of seasoned renewable energy professionals developing, constructing and operating wind and solar projects across the US. As the Senior Electrical Engineer, you’ll be responsible for technical leadership of the power systems portion of wind and solar projects during all phases of development and operation. You’ll be the first line for resolving the engineering review and evaluation of multiple development, construction and operating projects. The day to day activities have a wide degree of variety involving multiple projects simultaneously. This position requires up to 25% travel.

Responsibilities

Operations Phase:

  • Lead for all power systems technical support for operating wind and solar projects.
  • Advise on controls, SCADA, facility metering, FERC requirements, wind turbine and solar project performance issues.
  • Provide root cause analysis of power systems related issues as required.
  • Provide technical leadership in electrical system maintenance and evaluation.
  • Visit operating wind and solar facilities.
  • Analyze project performance of both solar and wind projects to identify performance improvement opportunities and implement same.

Construction Phase:

  • Provide project management assistance for substation, transmission line, and collection system construction.
  • Assist with SCADA system specifications, project design and installation.
  • Assist with power system and FERC requirements for field and construction project management personnel.
  • Perform field audits of construction projects as required to ensure design plans and standards are upheld.

Development Phase:

  • Provide technical support and oversight of electrical engineering design work by third party engineering firms.
  • Project management including layout of detailed project plans, monitoring progress and reporting to management of design and engineering review.
  • Ensure drawings and designs conform to Longroad standards and criteria.
  • Work with designated utility to finalize scope of work for interconnection requirements and agreements.
  • Assist in specifying and procuring electrical equipment for wind energy facilities.
  • Tour prospective wind and solar sites to evaluate potential construction challenges.

Qualifications

Requirements:

  • BSEE in power systems from an accredited university, MSEE preferred.
  • 7+ years of experience in electrical power systems engineering, direct experience in wind and solar project system design, construction and operations preferred.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain same.
  • Demonstrated experience with standard construction documentation review and construction monitoring, inspection and commissioning of MV and/or HV plants.
  • Experience with substation and transmission line design, construction and maintenance.
  • Experience with power system analysis applications such as PSS/E, PSLF, and/or PSCAD.
  • Understanding of overhead or underground collection systems.
  • Familiarity with NERC and FERC requirements.
  • Understanding of SCADA system requirements, design, implementation and operations.
  • Utility scale generation interconnection experience including process, requirements and implementation.
  • Experience with power purchase contracts, electric power system regulatory compliance and market structures.
  • Candidates must be available and willing to travel up to 25% of the time for periods of up to a week at a time.
  • Ability to understand and work within site and department budgets.
