~ Wood River Land Trust protects and restores land, water, and wildlife habitat in the Wood River Valley and its surrounding areas. We work cooperatively with private landowners and local communities to ensure these areas are protected now and for future generations. ~

Wood River Land Trust works with private landowners and local communities to protect and restore land, water, and wildlife habitat. Three primary land protection methods are conservation easements (or conservation agreements), donations of land, and bargain sales of land; your attorney and/or accountant can explain the tax benefits. The Land Trust also partners with local, state and federal agencies for preservation of lands important to the health of our environment and our communities.

Position Overview

The Pioneers Alliance is seeking two Stewardship Technicians, with a background and interest in conservation, to participate in rangeland-health monitoring and stewardship projects. These positions offer an opportunity to learn about conservation partnerships and range management in a hands-on setting.

The Pioneers Alliance is a partnership of non-profit organizations, landowners, public agencies, and community members that preserve natural resources and cultural heritage of Idaho’s Pioneer Mountains – Craters of the Moon landscape. The positions are located in scenic south-central Idaho, near Sun Valley and the Sawtooth Wilderness Area.

There is one 2-month position, and one 3-month position with a start date in May or June. Each position is 35 hours per week, with a somewhat flexible schedule.

Responsibilities

  • Perform vegetation, habitat and rangeland health monitoring
  • Collect data for new conservation easement grazing plans
  • Collect other monitoring data, including photopoints, vegetation data, and other biological data as assigned
  • Coordinate monitoring activities with other seasonal staff and volunteers
  • Data entry and organization of monitoring information
  • Other work may include other stewardship activities including weed control (physical removal & herbicide application), trail maintenance, habitat restoration, fence work , and other maintenance
  • Assist in updating private lands grazing plans
  • This includes landowner, staff and partner outreach, assessment of grazing plan needs, synthesizing findings and revising plans as needed

Qualifications

  • Able to perform physical, outdoor labor in remote locations
  • Willing to work under a flexible schedule, including work on occasional evenings/weekends
  • Ability to troubleshoot technical and project difficulties
  • Experience in wildland navigation using map, compass, and GPS
  • A driver’s license and good driving record (vehicle may be provided for work use)
  • Ability to work with people in groups and with individuals

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Educational background in natural resources or similar field
  • Experience with data collection, data entry, and some analysis
  • Strong plant identification skills
  • Interest in land management and stewardship
  • Strong verbal communication and writing skills
  • Experience with GIS preferred

Compensation: DOE; housing may be provided.
