We are looking for an entry to mid-level Environmental Specialist with 0-5 years of experience to work in our Indianapolis or Fishers, Indiana office. Your duties will consist of preparing NEPA environmental documentation and permits for infrastructure development projects.   The position requires excellent communication, organizational, and detailed document management and tracking skills. Technical responsibilities will include conducting ArcGIS mapping, environmental site assessments, preparing, tracking and submitting agency coordination, red flag investigations, programmatic and categorical exclusions, permits, public meetings, and coordination of supporting technical reports.  Technical field studies including wetland delineations, stream identifications, and endangered species surveys in support of NEPA documents will be required.

Responsibilities

In the office:

  • Prepare and mail merge agency coordination letters 
  • Conduct Red Flag Investigation reports
  • Prepare Categorical Exclusion (CE 1-CE 4) reports
  • Plan and prepare applicable project permits
  • Manage ArcGIS files
  • Coordinate with engineering staff and review road and bridge plans

In the field:

  • Conduct wetland delineations and functions and values assessments (such as In-WRAP or ORAM)
  • Perform stream assessment studies (such as QHEI and HHEI)
  • Provide field documentation regarding threatened and endangered species
  • Provide accurate documentation of field activities

Qualifications

  • B.A. or B.S. in Geology, Biology, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering or related field
  • 0-5 years of relevant experience desired
  • INDOT experience preferred
  • Proficiency in ArcView and/or ArcDesktop GIS systems
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Outlook)
  • US Army Corps of Engineers Wetland Delineation training a plus
  • BIAS, IPaC, and IDEM VFC experience a plus
  • Proficiency in technical writing and quantitative data analysis is a must
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License or ability to secure

Physical Demands and/or Other Job Information (if applicable):

  • Ability to work outside in all kinds of weather conditions
  • Ability to lift heavy objects such as testing equipment and materials samples
  • Ability to walk on uneven terrain and navigate steps, stairs and ladders
  • Ability to work in hazardous environments and use required Personal Protective Equipment. Environment will include dust, noise, tripping and overhead hazards
