~ At the McDowell Environmental Center, our curriculum is more than a walk in the woods although it may start there. ~

We believe experiential classes help students to better understand the natural world, leading them to a sense of responsibility for it. Focused on basic ecological concepts, the curriculum is hands-on and our classroom is the great outdoors, giving students the greatest opportunity to learn about themselves and their environment.
Topics covered can include:

  • Forest Communities
  • Map & Compass
  • Water Ecology
  • Earth Science
  • Group Dynamics
  • Canoeing

Position Overview

Located in the heart of Alabama, Camp McDowell is home to the McDowell Environmental Center — a wonderful place to live and work! At MEC, Environmental Education Instructors will enjoy classrooms without walls spread out over 1,140+ acres.

Positions are available during the spring (early February to mid-May) and fall (late August to mid-December).

Responsibilities

  • Responsibilities will include teaching groups of up to 12 students, from a variety of age levels and backgrounds, on topics that include geology, energy, social studies, forest ecology, aquatic habitat studies, challenge course adventure, team building, canoeing and outdoor skills.
  • Each week instructors also have the opportunity to lead evening programs that may include night hikes, astronomy, campfires, and live raptor and reptile programs.
  • Adapting lesson plans to match your teaching style and program development is highly encouraged.

Qualifications

  • Applicants must have a bachelor's degree, a fondness for getting your hands dirty, and have maturity, initiative, a sense of humor, flexibility and team spirit.

Compensation: Compensation includes pay starting at $290/week, meals, private rooms with shared kitchen, laundry and screened-in porch (with rocking chairs!), WiFi access, and an intensive two-week staff training.
