Position Overview

RRC Power & Energy is seeking a Sr. Substation Engineer to join our electrical engineering group in Tualatin, OR -- a suburb of Portland Oregon. This position will be responsible for leading the engineering and design effort for substation including High Voltage Substations up to 345kV. The design will focus on detailed design of utility and renewable energy substation systems. Candidates are required to have a minimum of 10 years of directly related experience and be a registered PE. We are looking for motivated individuals who understand the value in working toward success by delivering the highest quality services to our clients. 

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical execution and oversight of designs knowing substation physical design, protection and control, relay coordination, and relay programming.
  • Write high voltage equipment specifications and contractor work scopes, request vendor quotations, evaluate quotations, material purchase request forms, and vendor quotation evaluation for substation equipment including high voltage circuit breakers, switchgear, disconnects, high voltage power transformers, high voltage cable, and protection and control systems.
  • Interface with internal and external team members including Protection and Control Engineers, Electrical Designers, Physical Designers, Drafts people, Project Managers, and support organizations.
  • Be responsible for the oversight and integral knowledge of all specifications, single line drawings and schematics, plan and elevation drawings, general substation arrangement and layout, relay protection and control requirements, and layouts for high voltage bus, cable, high voltage equipment, conduit, cable, and wiring, grounding, switchgear and control buildings.
  • Perform design calculations such as battery sizing and DC system component selection, power transformer and circuit breaker selection, circuit protection, control and power cable selection and rating, bus, fittings, insulator, and lightning protection.

Qualifications

Job Requirements:

  • Must have or be able to get NCEES records to be licenses in multiple states.
  • Demonstrated electrical and mechanical troubleshooting capability.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • 10% of travel is expected to jobsites and for internal and client meetings, and includes overnight stays for several days.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States.
  • The applicant must have good oral and written communication skills and the ability to lead or be part of a project team.

Education/Experience Requirement:

  • Professional Engineering registration license or ability to obtain license.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering with a minimum of 10 years’ experience in renewable and utility HV substation design.
  • Excellent computer skills and familiarity with AutoCAD and its applicable software suite.
  • Familiar with all applicable standards (ANSI, ASTM, IEEE, IEC, etc.) as pertains to the design of electrical substations.

Desired Characteristics:

  • Ability to develop and implement standards and structured programs.
  • Previous experience installing and operating power equipment a plus.
