The forest products industry accounts for approximately four percent of the total U.S. manufacturing GDP, manufactures over $200 billion in products annually, and employs approximately 900,000 men and women.

Position Overview

The Manager, Environmental Policy is responsible for providing policy and technical support on various environmental, regulatory, energy and marketplace issues to support the advocacy of AF&PA.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor and analyze emerging regulatory, policy, and legislative issues related to the environment (such as biomass carbon-neutrality, air, water, energy and other relevant topics), sustainability, and policy issues that affect the marketplace
  • Help formulate industry policies and positions on regulatory, policy, and legislative initiatives
  • Help coordinate a high-priority AF&PA project aimed at reducing serious injuries and fatalities in the paper industry.
  • Recommend actions; work with department to implement proactive responses
  • Write comments on pending issues, develop issue papers and advocacy strategies and help develop advocacy strategies
  • Work with issue teams to effectively advocate for industry on high priority issues
  • Help ensure the association is communicating consistently to its members

Qualifications

Education, Experience and Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, environmental policy, political science, economics, public health or equivalent field preferred
  • 5 or more years of experience in public policy preferred
  • Experience with policy and technical aspects of environmental issues and statutes preferred

Qualifications, Skills and Knowledge:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills to effectively communicate issues to multiple audiences from generalists to technical experts
  • Strong understanding of the federal regulatory process
  • Ability to effectively contribute to policy development
  • Skilled at using Microsoft Office and performing research
  • Ability to work as an effective team member
  • Ability to juggle multiple responsibilities with high quality execution and performance
