~ Founded in 1975, the non-profit Adirondack Council’s mission is to ensure the ecological integrity and wild character of the Adirondack Park. ~

With members in all 50 states, the Council employs 14 staff in two offices: Elizabethtown in the Adirondack Park, and the state capital of Albany. To protect the Adirondacks, the Council uses the best science, the law, and an understanding of political decision making, to educate, inform and motivate the public and those who make public policy.

Position Overview

The Adirondack Vision Program Director will be the chief manager of a multi-year project titled Adirondack Vision: Delivering on the Promise of the Adirondack Park. This project will produce recommendations and strategies for strengthening the preservation and management of the Park’s wild lands and natural resources while respecting the needs of diverse human communities in environmentally responsible ways. Products will include published reports, digital presentations and internal strategic plans.

This is a full-time staff position at the Adirondack Council, with responsibility for all aspects of this cornerstone project, from daily project management, including budgeting and scheduling, to external leadership and communications. The position is funded for three to five years, with the possibility of extending that time to work on the implementation of recommendations following the completion of the initial reports.

Responsibilities

  • The program director will oversee completion of Vision findings and recommendations and will present and inspire support for them on an on-going basis with public officials, interest groups, and the general public.

Qualifications

  • This leadership position requires a combination of nuts-and-bolts management experience, strong written and verbal communications skills, and a deep commitment to large landscape community conservation and the legacy and future of the Adirondack Park.
  • The ideal candidate will have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree, with an advanced degree preferred.
  • They will have at least 5 years professional experience in a conservation-related field and a strong communications background.
