With over 300 acres and seven miles of hiking trails, there is plenty to see at all times of the year. You can bring your binoculars and go for a walk along our well-maintained trails. You will be sure to see a variety of local and migratory birds, depending on the season.

Position Overview

The Good Gardens at the Norman Bird Sanctuary is an organic-practice vegetable, herb and flower garden, hoop house for year-round planting, and composting area that is open to the public. NBS uses the garden to help visitors experience nature, learn about gardening, and see firsthand where their food comes from.

As an extension of the NBS Education Department, the Good Gardens Per Diem Educator will work with the Summer Camp and engage students in lesson focused on plants, insects, ecology, and similar topics. The Garden Per Diem Educator reports directly to the Director of Education for 15 hours per week. This position starts the week of June 18th and runs through the week of August 24th for a total of 10 weeks.

Responsibilities

  • Create and teach weekly garden-based lessons for a PreK-7th Grade audience
  • Utilize teaching tools such as books, pictures, and models to enhance lessons
  • Coordinate teaching activities with Good Gardens Master Gardener volunteer schedule
  • Schedule weekly garden programs with summer camp counselors
  • Teach on-site field trip programs in the garden
  • Utilize sustainable and organic gardening practices
  • Collaborate with the Director of Education to identify opportunities for programming and interpretation for the garden area

Qualifications

  • 1-3 years experience working with children in an environmental education setting (a variety of ages and abilities is preferred)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of plants and organic gardening practices
  • A creative, enthusiastic & collaborative thinker
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Must pass a background check prior to hire
  • Able to lift 25 pounds or more
