~ At Drumlin Farm Camps in Lincoln and Sudbury, campers ages 4–18 develop an appreciation for nature. Campers gain confidence and comfort in the natural world and understand the interconnectedness among people, land, and wildlife. ~

Our programs encourage campers to explore local habitats while connecting them to the joys and wonders of the natural landscape. Campers engage through crafts, games, songs, cooking, and hands-on activities specific to the site. Each of our three locations offer unique educational opportunities stemming from their differing landscapes.

Position Overview

Drumlin Farm Camp is looking for enthusiastic staff to teach campers in Grades 2-5 about and the nature and wildlife of Massachusetts at our Assabet River Camp location. Provide guidance, instruction and supervision of campers in accordance with Mass Audubon’s educational goals, American Camp Association standards, and the state’s health and safety regulations.

Work with our team to plan, prepare and conduct age appropriate lessons and hands-on activities. Lead explorations, stories, crafts, nature games and activities such as forest exploration, insect studies and ponding. Programs focus on nature, ecological research, community service, and teambuilding activities. Some camp session activities may include overnight campouts and off-site field trips.

Responsibilities

  • Protect the physical and emotional welfare of campers, fellow staff, and self
  • Work with peers to develop and teach nature camp lesson plans and prepare materials as needed
  • Lead songs and games for campers
  • Maintain an organized work environment and participate in daily Sanctuary cleaning tasks
  • Assume additional related duties as requested

Essential Functions (Applicants must be able to):

  • Visually identify safety issues related to camp operation
  • Monitor camp groups in all types of indoor and outdoor environments (forest, field, pond, shore) and look and listen for key safety concerns and alerts
  • Navigate, run, and play on trails, and easily access all areas of Assabet River National Wildlife Refuge by foot
  • Appropriately address and communicate with campers and families

Qualifications

  • Applicants must be at least 19 years old
  • Be available June 05 – August 10, 2018 for 40 hours/week, Monday-Friday 8:00am-4:00pm
  • Have experience and enjoy working with children
  • Have a strong interest in natural science, wildlife, and/or outdoor education
  • Show ability to design and implement nature-based lessons including games and crafts
  • Have certifications in community CPR (child and adult levels) and basic first aid current through August 2018 or willingness to obtain before June 2018
  • Have experience leading youth groups independently and be organized and self-motivated
  • Candidates must be flexible and creative
  • Provide documented proof of immunity or vaccination record as mandated by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and complete the camp’s health form and waiver
  • Successfully complete pre-camp training including Field School
  • As temporary seasonal employees, staff are paid for only the scheduled hours worked, and may be asked to take unpaid leave depending on camp enrollment
  • Favorable completion of both the Criminal and Sex Offender Record Information (expanded CORI & SORI) according to Mass Audubon’s guidelines is required for employment

Compensation: $12.00 per hour based on experience and position requirements.
