~ Founded in 1916, ASWP is a 501c3 nonprofit organization whose mission is to connect the people of Southwestern Pennsylvania to birds and nature through our programs, projects, and places. ~

Our nature sites include Beechwood Farms Nature Reserve (Fox Chapel), Todd Nature Reserve (Sarver), and Succop Nature Park (Butler). Through these properties we manage 737 acres of natural landscape and 12 miles of trails. In addition to these public properties, we own several properties that are for conservation-purposes only. With 4,700 members and over a century of history, ASWP is one of the largest, oldest, and most dynamic chapters in the Audubon network.

Position Overview

The Whetzel Land Steward (Land Steward) will support various functions of Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania’s (ASWP) conservation initiatives. This position provides the opportunity to learn about habitat restoration, native plants, land management, and environmental education methods. This is a 40 hour/week, seasonal position which will run from May 2, 2018 through August 17, 2018. Position start and end dates may be flexible if needed.

Responsibilities

  • Backyard Habitat Certification Program support through site assessments, reporting, and development of educational materials (50%)
  • Restoration initiatives including invasive plant management, site assessments, field data collection, and restoration plantings (30%)
  • General Audubon Center for Native Plants support including propagation, repotting, preparation and maintenance of the retail plant area, and supporting inventory and data tracking (20%)

Qualifications

Required:

  • Knowledge of native plants of Western Pennsylvania
  • Willingness to work outdoors in varying conditions
  • Experience conducting outreach activities and interacting with the public
  • Experience with Word, Excel, and Powerpoint
  • Positive attitude and a willingness to learn
  • Transportation to Beechwood Farms Nature Reserve (BFNR)
  • Valid Driver’s License

Preferred:

  • GIS and/or InDesign
  • Experience with landscape design, habitat management, green stormwater infrastructure, data management, environmental education, and/or field work

Compensation: The Land Steward will be compensated at a rate of $10/hour.

Additional Information

This position will be based at BFNR in Fox Chapel, PA (just outside of Pittsburgh). The Land Steward must have transportation to get to BFNR. A company vehicle will be available for use to get to sites, as needed, during the work day.
