~ The mission of the Bartlett Arboretum and Gardens is to provide a sanctuary to explore, enjoy, and learn about the habitats of the natural world. ~

We accomplish this by:

  • Preserving a 93-acre sanctuary of southwest New England natural ecosystems for generations to explore and enjoy
  • Providing comprehensive environmental, horticulture and plant science educational programs for children and adults
  • Providing opportunities for recreation, enjoyment and exploration of the natural world for all ages
  • Maintaining a diverse collection of trees, gardens and plants that celebrate biodiversity and reflect the ecology and character of our region
  • Promoting conservation and principles of sustainable landscape management

Position Overview

A full-time teaching position with Bartlett Arboretum & Gardens to assist with our school, camp, outreach, after-school, and public programming. The ideal candidate will be comfortable teaching a wide variety of ages from pre-school-aged children through adults. Botany and horticulture knowledge required.

General knowledge pertaining to other environmental education topics, such as sustainability, environmentalism, STEM-based learning, is also necessary. Candidates should be familiar with current educational trends and techniques at a local and national level, and be comfortable providing developmentally appropriate programming to a diverse population in both an urban and suburban setting.

Responsibilities

  • Teaching during the school year and summer, including our city-wide second grade program, after-school programs, adult arboriculture program, public education programming, and summer camps.
  • Plant and artifact care: Help maintain plant and artifact collections used for education programs throughout the year.
  • Lesson planning and curriculum design.
  • Support new education initiatives laid out by the organization at the beginning of each teaching year.
  • External marketing of programs through website, direct mail, social media, press releases, and other innovative solutions. Attend camp and school fairs and community events, as needed, to market the programs.
  • Manage high-school and college-aged interns, boy/girl scout groups, corporate volunteers.
  • Keep camper records and registrations in database.
  • Perform administrative duties as necessary.

Qualifications

  • Minimum B.A./B.S in plant science, environmental science, biology, education, or related field.
  • Minimum 3 years of teaching experience.
  • Experience working with children in an indoor and outdoor setting, providing them with safe, but enriching, learning opportunities.
  • Familiar with both Mac and Microsoft platforms, high proficiency with Microsoft office. Experience with database management software is preferred.
  • Must be able to work in a team setting as well as independently; flexibility and strong interpersonal skills is key.
  • Enthusiasm for the botanical and natural world and sharing it with children and adults is a must.
  • Must submit to background check and fingerprinting.
  • Must be willing to work weekends and evenings as needed.
  • Experience working in a non-profit setting a plus.
  • Should have experience designing curriculum and implementing new programming.
  • Current CPR/First Aid certifications or willingness to obtain.
  • Any other tasks as required by the CEO or Director of Education
