GRID is an entrepreneurial, high-growth non-profit organization that provides renewable energy and energy efficiency services to low-income families. Through its flagship Solar Affordable Housing Program, GRID trains and leads teams of volunteers and job trainees to install solar electric systems for low-income families and affordable housing providers, providing long-term savings for the people who need them the most.

In turn, low-income families are able to use their long-term savings to pay for basic expenses, and expand their economic opportunity by employing the skills and training they gained through GRID’s workforce development programs, in the growing field of solar installation. GRID’s vision is a successful transition to clean, renewable energy that includes everyone.

Based in Oakland, California, GRID has nine regional offices and affiliates serving all of California, Colorado, Washington D.C., Virginia, Maryland, and Delaware; GRID also has staff on the ground in Nicaragua, Mexico and Nepal GRID has a dedicated staff of 330 and growing!

Position Overview

We are looking for a full-time, experienced Solar Installation Supervisor to oversee all on-site aspects of PV installations on the homes of low-income families.

Office Location/travel:

  • This position requires some travel to sites throughout the office territory and occasional out-of-town travel such as organization wide yearly staff summit regularly held in California
  • Availability to work nights and weekends maybe required
  • GRID Alternatives may provide vehicles for work travel and/or travel reimbursement for personal vehicle use, but applicant must hold a valid driver’s license and good driving record

Responsibilities

  • Lead installations of solar electric systems with crews of volunteers and/or job trainees
  • Responsible for all technical and safety aspects of PV installations
  • Review designs for compliance with GRID Alternatives design standards and local and national code compliance
  • Train volunteers and job-trainees in solar electric installation
  • Ensure that all solar installations are installed according to GRID Alternatives safety and quality standards
  • Assist in warehouse organization, organization of tools and other construction resources, etc…
  • Work with and report to Construction Manager on meeting production goals
  • Conduct site visits and permitting
  • Schedule inspections and meet inspectors on-site at scheduled times
  • Trouble-shoot installed solar electric systems
  • Provide training, guidance and mentorship to SolarCorps Members, Interns and other persons interested in learning about PV installation

Other duties as assigned:

  • Other duties may include but are not limited to: designing, equipment purchasing, hardware store runs, equipment unloading and loading, answering homeowner and volunteer questions, talking to media and generally participating in activities necessary to make solar happen for low-income families
  • Every member of GRID Alternatives must participate in the organization's equity, inclusion, and diversity work

Qualifications

Position Requirements:

  • At least 2 year experience in PV system installation and troubleshooting
  • Experience leading a crew in PV installation
  • Excellent technical, computer skills, aptitude in math
  • Comfortable working as part of a team and willing to pitch in as needed, especially with training AmeriCorps members, other staff and volunteers
  • Flexibility and willingness to embrace change, go the extra mile, and bring ideas and energy to rapidly growing organization
  • Willingness to work on evenings and weekends
  • Excellent interpersonal, leadership and communication skills (verbal/written, ability to work with volunteers and clients, ability to represent GRID Alternatives positively)

  • Valid Driver’s license and clean driving record
  • Extensive travel throughout the Central Coast region
  • Some overnight travel

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in design of PV systems
  • Electrical License is a plus
  • Experience in training and/or working with volunteers
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Sketchup or AutoCAD
  • NABCEP certified
  • Bilingual English/Spanish a plus
  • Passion for sustainability, affordable housing, the environment, or environmental justice, or just generally grounded in making the world a better place

Compensation: This is an exempt full time position, salary commensurate with experience.
