Position Overview

Lafayette College invites applications for the position of Assistant Director for Food and Farm, colloquially known as the College Farmer. We seek an environmentally motivated, creative, and well-rounded leader to manage Lafayette's 3-acre working farm and community garden (LaFarm).

The Assistant Director for Food and Farm will oversee production of food for our dining hall and community partners, manage student farm employees and volunteers, collaborate with the academic division to integrate food and farm into the curriculum, and assist with student and faculty research. In that capacity, the successful applicant will contribute to the growth and future of the College's burgeoning food and farm programming.

Qualifications

  • A successful applicant will preferably have a master's or other advanced degree.
  • Applicants will also have at least 3 years of farm management experience, preferably in a university or college farm setting, and experience supervising staff and volunteers.
  • To ensure that LaFarm staff and volunteers are knowledgeable about food safety and take efforts to reduce risks, applicants should likewise be familiar with Good Agricultural Practices and relevant food safety protocols.
  • The Assistant Director will have a passion for the sustainable agriculture movement, enthusiasm for educating and engaging students, faculty and staff, and knowledge of marketing and promotional techniques, including social media.
  • The ideal candidate will also be able to work flexible hours as needed during the growing season.

Compensation: This is a year-round position with benefits, with a March 2018 start date. It is housed within the College's Office of Sustainability.
