~ Brooklyn Botanic Garden’s Project Green Reach (PGR) is an exciting, challenging, fast-paced, hands-on science program open to application from Title I schools in Brooklyn. ~

Established in 1989, PGR has served thousands of children from kindergarten through middle school. During the summer, PGR’s gardening and science-based Junior Botanist and Plant Investigator program serves rising 5th through 8th graders.

Position Overview

Brooklyn Botanic Garden is seeking a Project Green Reach Coordinator/Supervising Instructor.

Responsibilities

  • Teach lessons in public and nonpublic schools and coordinate tours at BBG.
  • Act as effective liaison with principals, teachers, summer student families, supply vendors, bus company, and BBG staff and volunteers.
  • Supervise, train, and mentor seasonal instructors, Garden Guide volunteers, and other assigned personnel in specially designed, inquiry-based tours.
  • Keep excellent records; order supplies for instruction; coordinate school application process and summer student application process.
  • Review and develop lesson plans for environmental and plant science content and inquiry-based methodology; ensure adherence to performance standards in the conduct of lessons.
  • Prepare for and conduct teacher workshops and summer family events.
  • Train for Youth Opportunities Program (YOP) leader role and co-lead three-day overnight camping trip for summer students.
  • Create and teach curriculum for the Junior Botanist and Plant Investigator summer program.
  • Help plan and maintain vegetable garden spring through fall.
  • Participate in the development and delivery of summer staff training program.
  • Share staff responsibilities for plant maintenance in BBG’s education greenhouses.
  • Provide other essential tasks as needed.

Qualifications

  • BA or BS degree (master’s preferred) in education, environmental education, botany, horticulture, or a related field.
  • 2 years’ formal or nonformal teaching experience.
  • NYC teacher certification preferred.
  • Excellent writing and speaking skills.
  • Energetic with creative skills to strengthen program.
  • Proficiency in a second language a plus.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and leadership skills.
  • Competence with computer word processing, spreadsheets, internet, etc.
  • Valid driver’s license (driving to sites required).
  • Willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends, including a three-day midweek overnight summer camping trip with students (and related YOP training sessions).
  • Willingness and ability to work outside in all weather and perform horticultural tasks for garden maintenance (lifting, bending, carrying, digging).
