~ The mission of SELT is to protect and sustain the significant lands in our communities for clean water, outdoor recreation, fresh food, wildlife, and healthy forests. ~

Since 1980, we have partnered with local landowners and municipalities to conserve more than 16,000 acres of land, with more than 10,000 acres through conservation easements. In 2013, SELT earned accredited status with the national Land Trust Accreditation Commission. SELT currently has 10 full time equivalent staff. SELT’s current office is located in beautiful downtown Exeter, New Hampshire.

Position Overview

The Southeast Land Trust of New Hampshire (SELT) Conservation Coordinator is based in the Exeter office and provides administrative, research, project management, outreach, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), field-related and other general assistance to the SELT Land Conservation and Stewardship staff. The Conservation Coordinator works under the supervision of the Land Conservation Director, with additional direction from the Easement Stewardship Director, in a collaborative team environment.

Responsibilities

  • Advances land conservation by providing Land Conservation and Stewardship staff support related to conservation planning, filing, database entry, and research.
  • Ensures sound paper and electronic project records are kept and assists with setting up, maintenance and closing of land conservation and stewardship project files, all in accordance with Land Trust Accreditation Commission standards.
  • Maintains the stewardship and land conservation database which is currently “Conservation Connections” and run reports from the database as needed.
  • Manages and maintains internally and externally produced spatial datasets including conservation lands and provides updates to GRANIT at least annually.
  • Undertakes basic GIS analysis and evaluation of current and potential conservation projects.
  • Produces maps for Land Conservation and Stewardship departments and for other SELT departments as needed.
  • Produces or helps prepare baseline documentation for conservation easements including field work, photographs, maps and written descriptions.
  • Manages or assists in the updating and creation of project forms, procedures, checklists and templates.
  • Assists in the preparation of internal presentations and communications to SELT Committees and Board of Directors.
  • Coordinates and solicits requests for proposals and contracts from contractors including but not limited to surveyors, appraisals, and Phase 1 professionals. May assist in preparing SELT-prepared hazardous waste screenings. Requests title and closing assistance from legal counsel.
  • Provides support and assistance in the preparation, submission, and reporting for grant applications and awards.
  • Works in close conjunction with Land Conservation and Stewardship team, participating fully with both Departments and taking on specific assignments as needed.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications and Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in wildlife, ecology, forestry, conservation biology, environmental/land use planning, land use law, or related fields.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize projects in order to effectively meet deadlines.
  • Ability to manage workflow involving multiple tasks requested by multiple people.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong interest in learning about conservation easements, fee simple land acquisitions, and other land conservation techniques.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, careful listener, and strong attention to detail.
  • Experience handling standard business communications including phone, e-mail, and web-based meetings.
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with a wide range of people from various backgrounds, including community members, contractors, and local government officials whose perspectives may vary widely.
  • Experience utilizing databases for data entry and report production.
  • Good judgment, independent initiative, sensitivity to situations, and a mature and friendly manner are critical.
  • Physical ability to do field work, including walking long distances.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel, and Adobe Acrobat Pro.
  • Ability to make attractive, easy to read, high quality maps with ArcMap 9 or 10 and to use ArcMap 10.5 for basic query/analysis functions.
  • Valid driver’s license, safe driving record, and reliable and insured personal vehicle available for work use.

Desirable Skills and Qualifications:

  • Experience or familiarity using Arc Collector App on a tablet. Willingness and desire to learn is a necessity.
  • Strong GIS skills or the ability and willingness to become a strong GIS user.
  • Knowledge and skills in developing queries in Microsoft Access databases.
  • One or more years of related work experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Working Conditions & Physical Demands:

  • The majority of work is performed in normal office environment not subject to extremes of noise, temperature, odor, etc. Operates computer, printer and other office equipment.
  • Work requires extended sitting and repetitive motion in the use of computer, keyboard, and mouse.
  • Field work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions and generally involves walking, bending, crouching and occasionally climbing.
  • Operates GPS, compass, camera and related tools.
  • Regular travel is required with occasional night meetings and weekend assignments.

Compensation: Competitive salary commensurate with level of directly relevant experience with a starting salary range of $37,000 to $42,000. Competitive benefits package including health insurance plan, long-term and short-term disability insurance, employee match to 403(b)(7) retirement plan, and paid vacation, sick time, and holidays.
