Named after the fabled lost gold mine, Lost Dutchman State Park is located in the Sonoran Desert, 40 miles east of Phoenix. Several trails lead from the park into the Superstition Wilderness and surrounding Tonto National Forest. Take a stroll along the Native Plant Trail or hike the challenging Siphon Draw Trail to the top of the Flatiron. Depending on the year’s rainfall, you might be treated to a carpet of desert wildflowers in the spring. Enjoy a weekend of camping and experience native wildlife including mule deer, coyote, javelina and jackrabbit.

Position Overview

  • This is a Temporary/Seasonal Position.
  • May work up to 40 hours per week and up to 1500 hours per year.
  • Must be able to work weekends, evenings and holidays.
  • Under the direct supervision of the Park Manager and the Assistant Park Manager, performs a variety of skilled work activities associated with the operation and maintenance of a state park.

Responsibilities

Natural Resources:

  • Under the direction of the Park Manager may serve as an interpretive guide,conduct programs and perform maintenance.
  • Provide general, historical, and scientific information and education to the visiting public concerning protection and management of natural and cultural resources.
  • Conduct interpretative natural and cultural resource programs and regularly perform work essential to preserve and protect the park's natural, cultural and recreational resources for the enjoyment of the public.

Customer Service/General:

  • Greets and provides information to park visitors.
  • Enforce park rules, collect fees, issue permits and perform office and clerical duties.
  • Performs work of moderate difficulty in maintaining campgrounds and day use areas, trail work, landscape and grounds maintenance, litter and garbage collection, cleaning restroom and shower facilities.
  • Performs routine facility maintenance, general housekeeping and custodial tasks.
  • Performs moderate level construction work on special projects and painting. Inspect and patrol park grounds for vandalism, malfunctions or problems.
  • May operate a gift shop or store, operate a cash register, write reports, perform supply inventories and make deposits.

Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • Customer service requirements.
  • Basic techniques in maintenance and upkeep of facilities restrooms and park grounds. Basic techniques for displaying and interpreting objects/artifacts and general resources to visitors.
  • General office procedures.
  • Motor vehicle operation and repair.

Skill in:

  • Basic practices and techniques in the maintenance and upkeep of facilities and grounds. General construction techniques including plumbing, wood working and electrical.
  • Driving, operating and maintaining automotive equipment.
  • Customer service and information dissemination.
  • Hand and power tool operation.
  • Oral and written communications.
  • Interpersonal relationships.

Ability to:

  • Understand and apply park rules and collect park fees.
  • Operate communications equipment.
  • Use a computer and software applications.
  • Communicate with the public in a positive, professional manner under both friendly and intense circumstances.
  • Work as a team member.

Additional Information

  • Employment is contingent upon completion of a post-offer medical/physical examination and the agency's ability to reasonably accommodate any restrictions.
  • Requires possession of and ability to retain a current, valid state-issued driver's license appropriate to the assignment.
  • Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver's license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records and must complete any required driver training (see Arizona Administrative Code R2-10-207.12.)
