Position Overview

This role provides a tremendous opportunity for the right individual to join a rapidly growing organisation and contribute towards the delivery of The Aquaculture Stewardship Council's (ASC) global vision, to achieve environmental sustainability and responsibly farmed seafood.

The ASC certification and labeling programme incentivises and promotes the best environmental and social choice in farmed seafood through it's work with aquaculture producers, seafood processors, retail and food service companies, scientists, conservation groups and the public, on a global scale.

This role is central to develop and support the uptake of ASC certified and labelled product in North America and to ensure the engagement of their supply base, so that they can achieve ASC certification while contributing directly towards the delivery of ASC's vision.

The focus is to build and deliver support for the ASC programme in the US and Canada: who will help partners meet a range of needs; from accessing certified supply, supporting their suppliers, providing information about certification and logo licensing and helping promote ASC brand awareness and uptake.

Responsibilities

  • Support and engage with ASC staff working directly with the MSC team in Seattle/or Washington to develop, coordinate and improve product integrity processes
  • Work closely with the ASC's improver programme and staff in Europe, US, China, Brazil and elsewhere to engage with the supply base of committed businesses and facilitate the uptake of ASC certification
  • Develop and implement with the DCO, an annual work plan aligned with the strategic objectives of the ASC that:
    • Is informed by analysis of farmed seafood sales and distribution into North America markets
    • Identifies key businesses to secure commitments to source ACS certified products
    • Identifies the needs of key stakeholders who can catalyse ASC progress in those markets
    • Identifies key suppliers to businesses in North America and other key ASC markets to promote engagement with them on their journey to achieving ASC farm certification
    • Identifies the needs of key collaborators able to support the promotion of the ASC and trains them to be able to do this
  • Engage with and seek the commitment of key commercial stakeholders to the ASC programme
  • Support existing commercial partners to build ASC's brand and bring value to them by championing their commitment to the programme
  • Link this demand to (certified) supply for these markets by targeting the participation of key suppliers and producers in the programme
  • Be able to explain the ASC programme, its unique features and its technical and operational benefits to build buy-in into ASC as a credible certification and labeling programme
  • Lever opportunities to engage key seafood buyers in joint marketing efforts to promote the ASC programme to end-consumers
  • Expand and strengthen relationships with NGOs and other stakeholders to build support and awareness of, and engagement with, the ASC programme
  • Provide support and / or input to ASC colleagues as required

Qualifications

Key Qualities:

  • A pro-active and independent approach to work, across many stakeholder groups
  • Enthusiastic and self-motivated, able to deliver in an organisation that is quickly growing and expanding
  • Ability to make pragmatic decisions

Skills and Experience:

  • A relevant degree or equivalent qualification
  • Fluent in spoken and written English, with another language being an asset
  • Excellent presentation and communication skills
  • Significant proven experience in the seafood business within North America and of key supply chains supplying them
  • Established networks in the North American seafood sectors and ideally, globally; particularly with the retail and food service sectors and their supply chains
  • Proven stakeholder engagement and management experience especially in the broader seafood sector
  • An understanding and affinity for why the promotion of environmental and social responsibility is imperative for the aquaculture sector.
  • Understanding of the role that certification plays in driving positive change
  • Knowledge and experience in marketing and / or communication would be an advantage
  • Knowledge of marine environmental sustainability and social responsibility issues would be an advantage
