Position Overview

Unity College is accepting applications for an Adjunct Instructor in FORESTRY for our Spring 2018 Semester to teach the following courses:

FY 1011 - Chainsaw Safety, Maintenance, and Use:

  • The chainsaw is one of the basic tools used for wood harvesting, line clearance, tree work, and camp and trail maintenance work.
  • Because numerous people are killed and injured while operating a saw, it is important that people who are trained to work in many of the outdoor fields be familiar with the safe and efficient use of a chainsaw.
  • After spending some time viewing safety videos and reviewing operational procedures, students will be felling, limbing, and bucking trees as well as learning about some basic maintenance techniques out in the woods.

FY 2163 - Wildland Fire Science and Management:

  • This course provides students with basic knowledge on how fire impacts forest environments, environment and weather influence fire behavior, wildland fires are suppressed, and fire is used as a land and vegetation management tool.
  • The course will also provide students with the knowledge and training to qualify as a basic wildland firefighter (FFT2-Red Card).
  • Extended laboratory sessions will provide practice in fire behavior prediction, prescribed burning techniques, and fire control methodology.

Qualifications

  • The ideal candidate must possess competence in the profession or discipline with the ability to effectively communicate training and subject matter to others.
  • Instructors will hold the minimum credentials appropriate to the discipline, such as professional certifications or appropriate academic degrees.
  • Master's degree and/or Ph.D. preferred. Depending on experience, availability, and interest, multiple courses and/or sections may be offered to a single qualified instructor.

Additional Information

  • This position begins on January 11, 2018 and ends on May 16, 2018.
