Position Overview

Berkeley Lab’s Climate & Ecosystem Sciences Division has an opening for a Environmental Geophysics Postdoctoral Scholar. The Postdoctoral Scholar will develop and implement new methodologies for improved understanding and quantification of shallow subsurface processes, including fluxes across bedrock-soil-land surface-vegetation compartments, using geophysical and hydrological datasets.

These developments will be applied in a mountainous watershed in the Upper Colorado River Basin and in the Alaskan Arctic Tundra. The Postdoctoral Scholar will work with a multi-disciplinary group of scientists to improve predictive understanding of multi-scale terrestrial system functioning, including hydrology driven biogeochemical processes.

This is a full time, 2 year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years paid postdoctoral experience.

Responsibilities

  • The function of the applicant will be to perform research on advancing acquisition, processing, data assimilation and inversion techniques for advanced monitoring and quantification of complex critical zone processes.
  • Essential are the understanding of surface and subsurface hydrological processes and the enthusiasm for improving understanding of such processes.
  • Duties will include bringing innovative ideas, developing novel approaches and publishing the results.

Qualifications

  • The applicant is required to have a PhD in environmental sciences, geophysics or hydrology.
  • Also required is an outstanding record of original and high-quality research and publications.
  • The applicant is expected to have demonstrated experience in the development of new methodologies for improved understanding and quantification of shallow subsurface processes using geophysical and hydrological datasets.
  • Essential for this position is expertise in geophysics, hydrology and/or soil physics with a particular emphasis on geophysical and hydrological data inversion and assimilation approaches and/or quantification of surface-subsurface water-heat-gas fluxes.
  • Desired skills include familiarity with hydrogeophysical techniques, soil physics, remote sensing approaches, various geophysical methods (ERT, EM, GPR, Seismic) and statistical or inversion methods for data analyses.
  • Enthusiasm for working with a team to improve understanding and prediction of field scale terrestrial system behavior is required.

Compensation

  • Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.
  • Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
  • Full-time (paid monthly), exempt from overtime pay.
  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.

Additional Information

  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • The posting shall remain open until the position is filled, however for full consideration, please apply by close of business on November 1, 2017.
