~ The National Center for Photovoltaics (NCPV) at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) focuses on technology innovations that drive industry growth in U.S. photovoltaic (PV) manufacturing. The NCPV includes multiple capabilities in PV research, development, deployment, and outreach. ~

To help the U.S. photovoltaic industry maintain a competitive position, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) created the NCPV in 1996. Learn more about the inaugural history of the NCPV.

Today, the NCPV activities support the DOE SunShot Initiative, which is administered by the DOE Solar Energy Technologies Office. The goal is to make large-scale solar energy systems (at low penetration) cost-competitive with other energy sources by 2020. The NCPV coordinates its research and goals with researchers from across the country, including the Quantum Energy and Sustainable Solar Technologies (QESST) Center and the Bay Area PV Consortium.

Position Overview

The National Center for Photovoltaics (NCPV) is looking for a motivated entry-level technician to help deploy and maintain PV systems in support of research to develop understanding of long-term performance of PV.

Responsibilities

The work will include such tasks as:

  • Mechanical construction of research equipment for long term outdoor experiments.
  • Wiring of electrical control panels and module interconnections for PV systems, including monitoring hardware.
  • Understanding of electrical maintenance and calibration routines.
  • Ability to learn new processes and operate independently.
  • Support of PV research activities, as needed.

Qualifications

Required Education, Experience, and Skills:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent and 4 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience or relevant Associate's Degree or certification program of comparable scope and 2 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience.
  • Substantial acquaintance with and understanding of general aspects of the job with a broad understanding of the detailed aspects of the job. Intermediate to advanced skills in research techniques and practices.
  • Good written, verbal, team, interpersonal and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with electrical wiring, basic electrical knowledge.
  • Operational knowledge of electrical test equipment.
  • Competency with hand and power tools.
  • Ability to work as part of team and to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to take direction from multiple people and learn quickly.
