Earth, Environmental and Geographical Sciences (EEGS):

Students in our department learn to interpret patterns and processes within nature and society. We seek to understand how the world’s natural systems operate and how humans have affected the environment. Our interdisciplinary environmental majors focus on how to use natural resources while also protecting them, and restoring the environment where necessary.

EEGS courses engage students in a host of contemporary issues, including environmental change, earth hazards and sustainability. Through field work, internship opportunities and mentoring by faculty, EEGS students gain experience that prepares them to graduate as critical thinkers and informed citizens capable of addressing challenges facing our planet.

Position Overview

The position is an interdisciplinary environmental scientist who will teach in NMU's Earth, Environmental & Geographical Sciences Department. This position will also cover research and service responsibilities appropriate for the rank of Assistant Professor.

Qualifications

Required Specialized Training/Certifications:

  • Ph.D. (granted by August 2018) in Environmental Science, Geography, or a closely related field.

Required Minimum Work Experience:

  • Effective university teaching experience and an active scholarly agenda focused on applied environmental science.

Knowledge, skills, abilities or attributes required:

  • Record of effective university teaching experience.
  • Active research agenda in applied environmental science disciplines such as natural resource management, environmental remediation, or environmental hazards.
  • Ability to teach interdisciplinary courses such as Introduction to Environmental Science, Introduction to Geographic Research, Environmental Impact Assessment, or an intermediate-level environmental science course related to the candidate's area of expertise that complements the EEGS Department's curriculum.

Additional Desirable Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated strong commitment and ability to provide excellent undergraduate instruction and advising.
  • Ability to secure interdisciplinary grants.
  • Ability to work collaboratively to study human-environment interactions and to address contemporary sustainability challenges.
  • Experience integrating quantitative analysis and Geographic Information Systems into environmental science research.
