Position Overview

The Environmental Practice Leader is responsible for leading a comprehensive environmental services group with special emphasis on environmental site assessments (Phase I/II ESA studies); hydrogeologic studies; geologic assessments; cultural resources; transportation projects and NEPA permitting; and natural resources including endangered species and jurisdictional waters.  Other responsibilities include managing a growing environmental, biological, and archaeological staff; managing budgets on multiple projects; and providing QA/QC for reports as needed. 

Responsibilities

The Environmental Practice Leader is the point of contact for key clients and high profile projects as well as providing staff leadership and development. Specifically, we are seeking an individual to: 

Leadership:

  • Ability to create innovative and effective client solutions that are aligned with both environmental services and company business objectives
  • Grow and assist in leading our Environmental Services Program with a focus on US energy (oil and gas, electric transmission and distribution) and/or transportation (highways, bridges, and railroad) sector clients
  • Provide leadership and management on a wide variety of environmental planning and permitting projects for energy, government, and private sector clients throughout Texas
  • Experience with and ability to hire, train, develop, mentor, and retain junior staff as we grow our client base and workload
  • Experience and ability to manage multiple complex projects and programs, in diverse settings and with changing requirements
  • Desire to thrive in a fast-paced, highly collaborative team atmosphere
  • Proven experience in building rapport and trust with key clients, business leaders, and team members 

Business Development:

  • Participate and lead marketing and business development on a local and state level
  • Sustain and grow clients & key accounts, with a focus on environmental services
  • Assist with expanding the entire range of environmental services and champion an integrated services approach
  • Build, grow and develop a team of high performers; recruit & retain specialist staff
  • Develop in-house sector expertise, best practices, and research and development initiatives
  • Actively participate in industry groups 

Strategic Thinking:

  • Identify trends and develop a long-term view of the industry, market and client base
  • Assist in the growth of Environmental Services by establishing new service areas
  • Anticipate medium and long term client needs and industry dynamics
  • Innovate and enhance Environmental Services’ capabilities, geographic foot print and integrated approach

Technical:

  • Perform, coordinate and manage site investigations, assessments, environmental contaminant remediation, regulatory compliance and related projects
  • Manage Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments, environmental compliance audits, site remediation, soil and groundwater investigations, UST inspections, SPCC plans, and/or other regulatory analysis and reporting
  • Conduct geologic assessments on the Edwards Aquifer Recharge Zone and karst feature evaluations, as needed
  • Evaluate data, perform analysis, interpretation and report preparation
  • Develop regulatory compliance plans
  • Assist with environmental compliance activities for land development and/or governmental clients
  • Prepare work scopes, proposals, reports and project deliverables 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in geology, biology, environmental science, natural resource management, archeology, planning, or related sciences
  • Minimum 10 years' experience in environmental consulting in geology, environmental science, engineering, natural resources, and/or related experience
  • Project experience working with Section 404 of the Clean Water Act and Section 10 of the Rivers and Harbors Act including coordination with regulatory agencies
  • Project experience preparing NEPA documentation, preferably for Texas Department of Transportation and other transportation projects and environmental permits
  • Working knowledge of environmental regulations such as Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, Section 7 of the Endangered Species Act, and Environmental Justice requirements of Executive Order 12898
  • Basic knowledge of cultural resources and experience with NPS, DOI, State Historic Preservation Offices, BIA, and Tribal Historic Preservation Offices
  • Demonstrated experience with federal agencies such as U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and/or U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS)
  • Experience with the TCEQ Edwards Aquifer Protection Program and Texas Risk Reduction Program requirements
  • Working knowledge of Texas/Central U.S. energy generation (wind, solar) and transmission markets preferred
  • Individuals certified as Qualified SWPPP Developers and Practitioners and Certified Professionals in Erosion and Sediment Control are desirable
  • Proven team-building and positive influencing skills
  • Must demonstrate strong ethics, influence and negotiation, leadership, the ability to effectively manage stress and engage in continuous learning.
  • Must be able to work in all types of weather and field conditions
  • Must be able to work 8 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday, with occasional overtime
