Team Profile:

Wood Mackenzie’s North America Power and Renewables Team delivers outstanding analysis on the issues facing the North America power and renewables sector.  Our analysis spans fundamental and financial analysis right through to strategy and execution. We also provide insights and updates into the power market, authoring detailed topical insights globally and analysing the market for current trends or future potential opportunities.

The North America Power and Renewables team publishes some of the most highly utilised data, reports and insights across Wood Mackenzie. Our broad industry knowledge and deep insight into the issues we cover is unparalleled.

Position Overview

We are looking for a Research Associate who does industry research and collects, manages, and enhances data to support Wood Mackenzie's rapidly evolving power and renewable services. The successful candidate must have a deep technical understanding of data collection and management processes but also possess excellent interpersonal skills to maintain and improve relationships with the wider team, data providers, and clients.

As an integral member of an open, dynamic and innovative team, the Research Associate is at the centre of our product suite and will have a key role in helping identify and implement areas for improvement and growth within the team.

Responsibilities

  • Building new databases on renewables and emerging energy topics, establishing and enhancing the processes for data collection, normalization, data cleansing, quality assurance, automation, and reporting
  • Project tracking including regular and frequent updates to projects in development, unit level ownerships, as sources include EIA EPM, EIA 860, ISO Queues, GIS reports, news articles
  • Run internal dispatch model (Aurora)  and take ownership of I/O processes, coordinate with data teams to publish commercial data tools, and maintain internal process and data file update
  • Track power purchase agreements (PPAs), M&A activity, review corporate quarterly filings. Track fixed, variable, and capital cost updates
  • Support internal demand modelling efforts (update state population forecasts, GSPs, etc.). Research various existing and emerging market issues:  batteries, net metering, rate structures, inter-fuel competition, review and summarize quarterly filings, M&A research, NERC reliability compliance
  • Help create new models / enhancements working with technical leads including plant valuation models, retail rate models, and mapping projects

Qualifications

Knowledge & Experience Required:

  • Demonstrable understanding of data management, including data collection and workflow integration skills
  • Proficiency with MS Office suite including Access & Excel
  • Experience managing databases and data management (MS SQL Server  preferred)
  • The ability to work closely with Research Analyst colleagues (from Natural Gas, Coal, Economics, and other specialist fields) to design and deliver high quality solutions
  • Adhere to best practices and maintainability while freely knowledge sharing with colleagues where improvements can be made
  • The ability to learn to synthesize historical and forecast data for regional and topical team members
  • SQL, VBA, R/STATA or ability to pick up programming languages
  • Minimum of Bachelor's Degree in relevant field.
  • At least one years’ experience 

Preferred Experience:

  • Interest in / knowledge of financial analysis / markets
  • Proficiency with data programming, such as SQL, Python, R
  • Other programming interests, e.g. VBA, KAPOW
