Position Overview

The Western Organization of Resource Councils (WORC) is a regional network of grassroots community organizations with 15,000 members and 39 local chapters. We are seeking a Communications Director who is experienced, capable, energetic, well-organized, a strategic thinker, and driven by a vision of a better world.  

The position is full-time and based in our Billings, Montana office with frequent travel and periodic work on evenings and weekends.  Our LEED platinum certified building is a showcase of green building strategies and technologies, and a great place to work.

Responsibilities

This satisfying and challenging job will see you:

  • Developing and implementing communications plans for WORC’s issue campaigns.
  • Leading WORC’s communications staff team.
  • Providing capacity building assistance to WORC’s member groups as part of a total team effort.
  • Developing and honing your skills as a competent and confident group facilitator.

Qualifications

  • Highly motivated, proactive work style and excellent organizational skills.
  • 3-5 years experience in communications and media relations.
  • Proven ability to lead planning, coordination and execution of communications strategies, marketing and social media.
  • Strong written communications and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience using innovative methods to promote organizations and win campaigns, including visual and content storytelling strategies.
  • Ability to develop an integrated communications plan that includes an overall narrative, framing for maximum impact, and effective message delivery through multiple media channels including social media, earned media and paid media.
  • Experience working with reporters; existing relationships with regional and national energy, environment and agriculture journalists preferred.
  • Familiarity with non-profits, community organizing and commitment to the principles of community organizing.
  • Ability to position an organization to achieve tangible outcomes in a competitive communications environment.
  • Ability to coach and support grassroots leaders as spokespersons, and train leaders and staff.

Compensation: Competitive salary range is based on a nonprofit scale and is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Generous benefits include health insurance and dental insurance; sabbatical, vacation and sick leave, and retirement plan with employer contribution.

The position will remain open until filled, but applications are encouraged by February 28, 2017. The target date for work to begin is April 1, 2017.
