September Release: Vanishing of the Bees Documentary

The documentary film, Vanishing of the Bees, which will be released in September, takes an investigative look at the economic and political implications of the worldwide disappearance of honeybees. The feature-length documentary is narrated by Oscar-nominated Ellen Page.

Maryam Henein and George Langworthy, the documentary's directors, are  launching events nationwide starting this month through environmental groups, NGO's, beekeeping associations, chefs, gardening clubs, women's alliances, and others to help teach people in their communities about the plight of the vanishing honeybee and what can be done to save them.

Vanishing of the Bees follows commercial beekeepers David Hackenberg and Dave Mendes as they strive to keep their bees healthy and fulfill pollination contracts across the U.S. Filming across the US, in Europe, Australia and Asia, this documentary examines the alarming disappearance of honeybees and the greater meaning it holds.

Following the story for three years, directors Langworthy and Henein chronicle the innermost thoughts and feelings of beekeepers and scientists as they fight to preserve the honeybee. Not just a story about Colony Collapse Disorder, the film provides a platform full of solutions, encouraging audiences to be the change they want to see in the world.

Honeybees are quickly disappearing across the planet. Known as Colony Collapse Disorder, this phenomenon has brought beekeepers to crisis in an industry responsible for producing apples, broccoli, watermelon, onions, cherries, almonds and a hundred other fruits and vegetables. Commercial honeybee operations pollinate crops across the US that provide one out of every three bites of food on our tables.

I think everyone can remember a time when Honeybees were everywhere-now where have they gone? And, what does it really mean for us?
