College of the Rockies Announces its First Degree

Bachelor of Business Administration in Sustainable Business Practices

College of the Rockies is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year. What better achievement could it obtain than approval from the Degree Quality Assessment Board of British Columbia and the Ministry of Advanced Education and Labour Market Development to be able to confer its first, very own College of the Rockies' degree.

Becoming a degree-granting post-secondary institution is not an easy task. There are many standards, evaluations and criteria to meet, and the process takes years. This is why COTR is proud to announce its Bachelor of Business Administration in Sustainable Business Practices degree commencing September 7, 2010.

MLA Bill Bennett said, "I congratulate College of the Rockies on behalf of the people of the East Kootenay. It's a major step for a post-secondary institution to be able to confer its own degree and I'm hopeful this is just the first of many."

President and CEO Dr. Nick Rubidge added, "Our Business faculty, in consultation with regional businesses and community members, have worked long and hard on this. A great deal of credit goes to them all for coming up with an applied, practical degree students can use in their careers. It's very flexible with individual pathways tailored to suit students' goals, and it celebrates our values, location and environment."

The BBA in Sustainable Business Practices is a four-year program that integrates social, economic and environmental theories and applications for sustainable business practices in a wide variety of fields. Sustainability is defined as meeting the needs of today without compromising the needs of the future. It's becoming the benchmark for businesses in the 21st century.

Dave Butler, Director of Sustainability for Canadian Mountain Holidays said, "Sustainability is becoming mainstream in business around the globe. With 1,600 companies, in 60 countries, now issuing regular sustainability reports, and with billions of dollars in capital moving to businesses that have made commitments to becoming sustainable, I am very pleased to see College of the Rockies take this important and timely step by offering this new degree."

The College of the Rockies BBA degree program is very flexible and can be tailored to an individual student's career path.  It combines arts and science courses with a COTR diploma in accounting, marketing, Aboriginal financial management or general management with online completion of upper level business specialization courses at COTR and a variety of accredited institutions.

It also includes an applied sustainability focus in the fourth-year Capstone courses, taken through COTR, which will culminate in the Bachelor of Business Administration in Sustainable Business Practices degree.

Mike Adams, CA, a former COTR student and now a partner at Taylor Adams, Chartered Accountants commented, "It's absolutely wonderful that students from our region will be able to achieve a Business degree without leaving the Kootenays. I'm sure that if this opportunity had been available to me in the past, I would have jumped at the chance."
