Turner Completed $3 Billion of Green Construction in 2008

Turner’s Portfolio of Green Buildings Reaches All Time High Clients View Green Buildings as Having Many Benefits for Owners and Occupants

(WORLD-WIRE) NEW YORK, February 23, 2009 /PRNewswire/ Turner Construction Company, the nation’s leading builder of “green buildings,” completed more than $3 billion of green construction projects during 2008. In addition, the firm’s sustainable construction work has grown to 40% of its backlog. Turner’s green building projects are in wide array of building types including in the education, commercial, healthcare and aviation segments.

Turner has completed 80 projects that have been LEED Certified by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). An additional 130 projects are LEED Registered. These projects are employing strategies to improve a building’s performance in five key areas of human and environmental health: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality. Turner’s active green projects during 2008 include:

  • Sacramento International Airport Terminal B, $286 million, seeking LEED-NC Certification, Sacramento, Calif.
  • University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Residence Hall and Student Dining and Residential Programs Buildings, seeking LEED-NC Silver Certification, Champaign, Ill.
  • Westinghouse Electric Company Headquarters Campus, $216 million, seeking LEED-NC Certification, Cranberry, Pa.
  • Haborview Medical Center, 9th and Jefferson, $130 million, seeking LEED-NC Silver Certification, Seattle, Wash.
  • Stanford University Graduate School of Business, $260 million, seeking LEED-NC Platinum Certification, Palo Alto, Calif.
  • Memorial Sloan-Kettering Mortimer B. Zuckerman Research Center, seeking LEED-NC Silver Certification, New York, N.Y.
  • Yale University Health Services Center, $97 million, seeking LEED-NC Silver Certification, New Haven, Conn.

Turner expects that client interest in Green buildings to continue. In a survey of commercial real estate executives Turner found that they viewed green buildings as having lower energy, operating and lifecycle costs, higher building values, asking rents and occupancy rates.

In 2008, Engineering News-Record recognized Turner as having the most LEED Accredited Professionals on staff among construction management firms and as the largest builder of LEED Certified projects in the United States.

Turner has also taken steps to green its operations by adding more high mileage and hybrid vehicles to its fleet, diverted over 75,000 tons of waste on its jobsites in 2008 and through greening its own offices as they are renovated.
