Mexican Food Firm Builds Own Large Wind Farm

SustainableBusiness.com News

Grupo Bimbo (BIMBOA.MX), one of the world's largest breadmakers, announced plans to build a 90 MW wind farm in Mexico.

When completed it will generate almost 100% of the electrical power consumed by the company's 65 Mexican facilities.

The wind farm will be located in Union Hidalgo, State of Oaxaca. It will be built by DEMEX, an affiliate of the private Spanish company Renovalia Energy.

Daniel Servitje, Grupo Bimbo CEO, said his company is the first in the food industry to tap renewable energy on such a large scale.

The Chairman of Renovalia Energy, Mr. Juan Domingo Ortega Martinez, said, "This construction constitutes a landmark in the expansion policy of renewable energies in Mexico. The total investment for wind project is approximately US$ 200 million. This wind farm will begin commercial operations for Grupo Bimbo at the end of 2011."
