Trilliant Incorporated, a smart grid communications provider announced that it has been selected by British Gas to provide the communications equipment for their smart meter deployment.
The initial roll out to support over 1,000,000 of British Gas’ nearly 16 million customer accounts will be completed in 2012 and make Trilliant one of the largest providers of public wireless network meter communications solutions world-wide.
British Gas, part of Centrica plc (CNA.L), is the United Kingdom's leading energy and home services provider. The utility has previously deployed Trilliant’s UnitySuite™ Head-End Software as the enterprise system to manage all smart energy devices, and now has selected Trilliant to provide the communications equipment to connect smart electric meters, gas meters, in-home smart energy devices, and other future home energy devices such as solar, wind, and electric vehicle chargers.

The U.K. Department for Energy and Climate Change has set the target of having smart meters in every home by 2020 or sooner. This amounts to roughly 47 million meters at 26 million locations. Smart meters combined with a Smart Grid provides transparency into energy consumption for both utilities and consumers, helping people reduce their energy bills, reducing utility operational expenditures, all while also reducing carbon emissions nationwide.

In July, the company raised $106 million in capital from Investor Growth Capital (the venture arm of Investor AB (IVSXF.PK) of Sweden), VantagePoint Venture Partners, as well as ABB and GE (NYSE: GE).
Trilliant currently has more than 200 utility customers including Centrica, Iberdrola USA, and Hydro One.
