Australia's Labor Party returned to office this week after gaining support from independents and Greens. As a result, the country is much more likely to pass climate change legislation, according to a Reuters story.
National elections in August unsettled the political landscape in the lower house of Parliament, leaving neither major party with a majority.
Climate change continues to be a decisive issue. Kevin Rudd stepped down as prime minister earlier this year, in large part, because he was unable to pass legislation to create a carbon trading scheme. His Labor-party successor, Julia Gillard, said she would renew the effort to create the scheme, but first she had to survive national elections.
By winning a greater number of seats, Greens and independents now hold the key for Gilliard and Labor to remain in control. As a result, their top issues--including climate change--are likely to become the top legislative priority.
