Governor Races Could Be Make-or-Break For U.S. Climate Efforts

In the absence of federal legislation to address climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, progressive states have taken the lead over the last decade.

But that leadership could change in November elections, according to a report on Politico, which tracks key gubernatorial races in California and New Mexico. 

If conservative candidates win elections in these states, it could mean the end for California's ambitious climate regulations, as well as the beleaguered Western Climate Initiative.

Other key races include Maine and Massachusetts, both member states of the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative.
