$5,000 Buys Silence on Oregon Wind Farms

SustainableBusiness.com News

Caithness Energy--one of the largest, private renewable energy developers in the U.S.--is offering residents in rural Oregon $5,000 to sign waivers forfeiting their right to complain about the noise produced by wind turbines.

The area is a hotbed for wind farm development. The state already has a noise ordinance for wind turbines, but it is not strictly enforced--especially if there are no local complaints.

Some landowners are happy to take the easy money, while others oppose the addition of more wind towers in the picturesque region.
