General Motors on Tuesday announced that its first electric vehicle, the Chevrolet Volt, will be priced at $41,000--before a $7,500 federal tax credit.
The announcement is part of a build-up to the car's commercial launch at the end of this year in four U.S. regions.
The Volt costs about $8,000 more than the all-electric Nissan Leaf, which is expected to be the primary all-electric competitor in the U.S. until 2012, when other manufacturers are scheduled to begin introducing their first EVs.
Nissan recently announced that it will match the eight-year, 100,000-mile warranty offered by General Motors for the Volt. And both automakers are offering to lease their vehicles for $350 a month.
