Vestas Receives Chinese Order for 50MW of Wind Turbines

SustainableBusiness.com News

Leading wind turbine maker Vestas (VWS.CO) secured another large order from China Datang Renewable Power Co. Ltd.

The company requested 25 2-megawatts (MW) turbines. The turbines are designated for the Alatan wind farm near Tongliao in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and delivery is expected in 3Q10.

It was the second 50-megawatt order from Datang announced by Vestas within five days.

The sale includes transportation, installation and commissioning as well as a VestasOnline® Business SCADA application. The application includes an extensive range of monitoring and control functions allowing the wind farm to be controlled in much the same way as a conventional power plant.

Vestas was the first wind turbine company to enter the Chinese market when it installed the first turbines in Shandong in 1986. Vestas has installed wind turbines in thirteen provinces in China.

Foreign wind turbine makers have had difficulty winning orders in China over the last couple years, as preference has been given to the country's domestic producers, such as A-Power (Nasdaq: APWR) and Sinovel.

Vestas says it is working hard to build a supply chain in China that can fully support the construction of wind turbines with increasing levels of Chinese-made content.

Vestas has its largest integrated manufacturing complex in Tianjin. The company's China headquarters is in Beijing; a separate factory is located in Hohhot, a global procurement office is in Shanghai, and the company is currently commissioning a new foundry in Xuzhou.
