During his address from the Oval Office last night, President Barack Obama attempted to reassure the U.S. public that his administration is doing everything possible to deal with the oil spill crisis in the Gulf of Mexico.
He vowed to "make BP pay" and declared that "We will fight this spill with everything we've got for as long it takes."
He said he has asked former Mississippi Governor Ray Mabus to develop a long-term Gulf Coast Restoration Plan--to be funded by BP PLC. But he offered no specific details on short term action to stop the flow of oil and gas into the Gulf.
Earlier on Tuesday, U.S. scientists raised their high-end estimate for the amount of oil being released by the damaged well head by 50%. (Reuters reporting)
It's the second upward revision in a week. They now say the per-day flow rate is likely between 35,000 and 60,000 barrels (1.47 million and 2.52 million gallons).
