Energy Takes Top Priority in Washington

SustainableBusiness.com News

Several key events will happen in Washington this week that could affect the future of U.S. energy policy.

President Obama will address the nation, live from the Oval Office, tonight at 8 p.m. to talk about the Gulf oil spill. All the major broadcast and news networks plan to carry the speech, in which he is likely to push for a comprehensive energy overhaul.

Senators John Kerry and Joe Lieberman will hold a news conference in the U.S. Senate this afternoon to announce the results of the EPA's economic analysis of their climate and clean energy bill, the American Power Act.

Thursday, all 59 Democratic U.S. Senators will hold a caucus meeting. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has promised they will talk about "nothing but energy."

According to a New York Times story, the oil spill may spur action on energy legislation, but probably not on initiatives--such as cap-and-trade--to address climate change.
