Experts Question Estimates of Gulf Oil Spill

Scientists and environmental groups are questioning estimates given by the US government concerning the size and rate of the ongoing Gulf oil spill.

Two weeks ago, the figure given by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) was that the Deepwater Horizon site was spilling 5,000 barrels a day. (A barrel is 42 gallons.)

But numerous experts say analysis of underwater video released Thursday suggests the spill rate could be vastly larger.

BP says there is no way to accurately measure the spill and that the company's first priority is to stop it. The government has not modified its estimate.
