SunEdison Announces 12 Solar Plants in Italy

SustainableBusiness.com News

SunEdison, the solar development division of MEMC Electronic Materials, Inc. (NYSE: WFR), announced 12 one-megawatt (MW) solar energy plants in the province of Lecce, Apulia in Italy, and announced a EUR 47 million financing deal with Norddeutsche Landesbank Girozentale in Germany.

Seven of the plants are already fully operational and were grid connected and sold in 1Q10. The other five plants are under construction and expected to be completed and operational by 3Q10.

The EUR 47 million financing deal covers the majority of the plants.

SunEdison said it plans to continue to expand rapidly in Italy and in targeted areas in the United States, Canada and Europe.

In March, the company announced a 72-MW photovoltaic solar plant to be built in northeastern Italy near the town of Rovigo. It is currently the largest photovoltaic plant planned for Europe.

In April, Sun Edison announced plans to build 14 roof-top solar projects in Ontario, Canada with a combined capacity of about 3 MW.
