Samsung To Build California Solar Farms

SustainableBusiness.com News

Korean electronics conglomerate Samsung (005930.KS) will participate in the development of 130 megawatts (MW) of photovoltaic solar power in California, according to a New York Times report.

The company's joint venture with ENCO Utility Service, called Solar Project Solutions has signed 25-year power purchase agreements with the utility Pacific Gas and Electric (NYSE: PCG) for a series of mid-sized solar farms.

These will consist of a 50-MW plant and three 20-MW plans in Tulare County and a fourth 20-MW plant in Kings county.

Samsung recently signed a massive deal to build wind farms and manufacturing facilities in Ontario.

The California deal continues a trend of recent months, as utilities sign power purchase agreements for smaller, utility-scale solar projects to meet near-term production goals. The massive projects--like BrightSource's Ivanpah plant--are moving slowly through the siting and permitting process.
