OPDE Group To Bring Solar to Mexico

SustainableBusiness.com News

Spain's OPDE Group has signed an agreement to build 45 megawatts of photovoltaic solar power in Mexico by 2013.

The first of the 1-megawatt (MW) solar farms will be located in the Logistics and Industrial Park in the state of Durango and will be fully operational in 2010.

The agreement also covers the opening of new branches of OPDE's solar subsidiaries OPDE, Proinso, Mecasolar, in this Mexican region within approximately three years.

Durango is one of the 32 federal states of the Republic of Mexico. It is located north of the country and has a population of 1.5 million inhabitants.

With this agreement, the Spanish Group reinforces its presence on the American continent, where it already has projects underway, including a 24-MW solar farm (USA) and a production plant for solar tracking systems in San Francisco.

Greece, Italy, Germany and France are other countries where OPDE is active.

Mecasolar focuses its activity on the design and manufacture of solar trackers and fixed structures. Proinso is dedicated to providing REC (REC.OL) and Trina Solar (NYSE: TSL) modules, fixed structures and tracking, as well as SMA inverters, becoming the first international distributor of these leading global brands in the sector, with over 100 MW of modules and 140 MW of inverters supplied.

OPDE currently employs 300 people. The plants promoted and built directly by OPDE in the 2004-2009 period, have together a total capacity of 115 MW.
