Federal regulators are taking steps to reduce pharmaceutical residues in US drinking waters, according to an Associated Press story.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has listed some pharmaceuticals for possible regulation, while also launching a survey of water treatment plants across the country.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has updated a list of drugs that can be flushed down the toilet and declared a goal of having all unused medicines returned.
And the National Toxicology Program is stepping up research into human health effects of low environmental doses.
"I think we are trying to be as aggressive as we can. We understand it's a major national issue. We understand it's a major public concern," said Peter Silva, the new water administrator at the EPA.
