US President Barack Obama and India Prime Minister Manmohan Singh signed a memorandum of understanding to launch what is being called a "green partnership."
The agreement affirms the two nations' commitments to address climate change, while pursuing energy security and clean energy.
The signing took place during Singh's visit to Washington D.C. Tuesday, and follows a similar agreement made with China last week.
Few details were available yet about the scope of the green initiative, but it is expected to extend to wind power, solar power, biofuels and carbon capture.
The Obama administration is attempting to solidify cooperation between the US and the two largest emerging economies before the Climate Change Summit in Copenhagen next month.
"We reaffirmed that an agreement in Copenhagen should be comprehensive and cover all the issues under negotiation," President Obama told reporters. "We resolved to take significant national mitigation actions that will strengthen the world's ability to combat climate change. We agreed to stand by these commitments with full transparency through appropriate processes as to their implementation."
