India Taking Leadership Role on Climate Change

India's Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will visit Washington later this month for his first summit visit with US president Barack Obama.
India has a history of troubled relations with the US and other developed Western nations, but is repositioning itself as a cooperative global power. This new stance is most obvious in its attitude on climate change, according to a recent Newsweek article.
In September, India softened its negotiation stance for a climate change treaty, in an effort to reach an accord with developed nations. And Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh announced that the country would voluntarily curtail future emissions, even without a global pact or financial support from the West.
Ramesh said in Copenhagen in December, India would "be a deal maker, not a deal breaker."
