U.S. Military Gets Behind Green Energy

Ft. Irwin in San Bernardino County, California, has become a testing ground for green initiatives that the Pentagon estimates could save millions, while making the services more eco-friendly and saving lives in war zones, where fuel convoys are frequent targets, according to a Los Angeles Times report.

Ft. Irwin, which is a primary training center for troops heading to Iraq and Afghanistan, is full of plug-in cars, solar panels and new energy-saving experiments. 

The Defense Department apparently got a wake-up call when its fuel bill jumped from about $13 billion a year in 2007 to $20 billion in 2008. 

Now, many alternative energy advocates are hoping that the military's backing will legitimize these energy sources to the nation's conservatives.
