Some of the world's largest rivers are in decline, according to a new report that analyzes the flow of water in 925 major rivers over the past half century.
The reduction in river flow to the Pacific Ocean was about equal to shutting off the Mississippi River, according to the researchers at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado.
The only area showing a significant increase in flow was the Arctic, where warming conditions are increasing the snow and ice melt.
"Freshwater resources will likely decline in the coming decades over many densely populated areas at mid to low latitudes, largely due to climate changes," lead researcher Aiguo Dai said.
