California Is In Climate Peril - Chu

California, the nation's leading agricultural state, could lose the multi-billion dollar industry to climate change by the end of the century, new Secretary of Energy Steven Chu warned this week.

In addition, he said the state's cities could become unlivable, if worst-case scenarios play out. In such scenarios, 90% of snowpack in the Sierra mountains will disappear, erasing a huge portion of the state's water supply. 

"I don't think the American public has gripped in its gut what could happen," Chu said. "We're looking at a scenario where there's no more agriculture in California." And, he added, "I don't actually see how they can keep their cities going" either.

In his first interview since taking office, Chu told the Los Angeles Times that education could be part of the solution.
