Suzlon Planning First Foray into Solar

SustainableBusiness.com News

Suzlon (SUZLON.BO), the world's fourth-largest producer of wind turbines, announced this week that it has chosen two sites in India for its first solar power projects.

The company, based in India, plans to build solar power plants in Gujarat and Rajasthan, but no other details were announced.

Suzlon, which reportedly has 2,500 megawatts worth of orders for its wind turbines, cited that the opportunity is solar was too good to pass up.

However, Suzlon has not been immune to recent troubles in the financial market. The company announced this week that its bid to buy the remaining stake in Germany's REpower Systems (RPW.BE) for 270 million EUR ($360 million) will not take place until May 2009, six months later than originally planned.

In September, Suzlon Green Power Ltd. announced a commitment to develop $5 billion in green energy assets over five years, primarily in India and China.
