More EV Details, Less Excitement at L.A. Car Show

Fiscal uncertainty in the auto industry has dimmed the excitement over electric vehicles at this year's Los Angeles auto show. However, car makers from the U.S. and abroad are showcasing significant advances.

Nissan, BMW, GM and Volkswagen are among the companies touting electric vehicles they hope to bring to market in the next few years. But the prevailing message is that customers need to have patience and the automakers need government support to transition to the mass production of a radically different type of technology.

With GM, Nissan and others promising the launch of electric vehicles in 2010, it's easy to forget that widespread adoption of electric vehicles is still years away.

Nissan Chief Executive Carlos Ghosn--ignoring small, boutique electric car makers--summed it up quite bluntly: "The reality is today there are zero electric cars on the market."
