Coca-Cola Targets 100% Can Recycling

SustainableBusiness.com News

Coca-Cola Co. announced Wednesday a long-term goal to recycle or reuse 100% of the aluminum cans it sells in the United States.

The global soft-drink giant said it currently uses approximately 60% recycled aluminum in its beverage cans. Coca-Cola North America president Sandy Douglas said the ease with which old cans can be recycled into new one makes the process 95% more energy efficient than making cans from raw materials.

Coca-Cola announced the new target following the National Recycling Coalition's 10th Annual Gala and Award Ceremony in Washington on Tuesday, where the company was given the NRC "Recycling Works" award.

Coca-Cola is debuting a new interactive recycling trailer at NASCAR's Daytona 500 this weekend. The 24-foot trailer is designed to educate fans on the benefits of recycling and includes multi-media public service announcements from racing stars like Tony Stewart, Mark Martin, Dale Jarrett and others.
