Super Bowl XLI, this weekend, will be the first National Football League championship game to run on 100 percent renewable energy.
Sterling Planet Inc. is supplying renewable energy certificates to indirectly offset greenhouse gas emissions associated with both the Super Bowl and the NFL Experience Theme Park operating in conjunction the with the big game.
"The NFL“s Super Bowl will serve to broaden awareness of renewable energy as a viable, readily available and affordable option for meeting energy needs while safeguarding the environment," said Mel Jones, Sterling president and CEO.
The NFL previously had two carbon neutral football games, when thousands of trees were planted in host cities to offset emissions. This is the first time the league is adding renewable energy credits.
Using renewable energy certificates (RECs), Sterling Planet and the FPL Sunshine Energy program for business customers will provide Florida- generated renewable energy from solar and bioenergy sources in the name of Dolphin Stadium, the NFL and the South Florida Super Bowl XLI Host Committee.
